October 7, 2009ALEXANDER MCQUEENGIOVANNI MODEL ALANA ZIMMER works the McQueen runway. Then the models came out, dressed in short, reptile-patterned, digitally printed dresses, their gangly legs sunk in grotesque shoes that looked like the armored heads of a fantastical breed of antediluvian sea monster. McQueen, according to an internal logic detailed in a press release, was casting an apocalyptic forecast of the future ecological meltdown of the world: Humankind is made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, and we may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice cap dissolves October 6, 2009IRINA CLOSES UNGARO SHOW
That seems to be the general consensus after LiLo revealed her debut collection as “artistic advisor” for Ungaro during Paris Fashion Week on Sunday. The line, which featured plenty of bright colours and a lot of hearts, was panned by fashion critics from around the globe. Wrote the New York Times: “Emanuel Ungaro was a couture king of drape and shape. When a swath of white dress was covered with a white fur stole, there was some attempt to move from teen night out to a couture elegance. Yet will this collection of hearts but with no soul be enough to entice young women who could probably find these looks anywhere?” From the Telegraph: “The collection she collaborated on with the Spanish designer, Estrella Archs, was hardly an unqualified success. How could it be when the pair, chiefly Archs, had only three weeks to pull it together? Ungaro himself, who founded his house in 1965, must be horrified at the arrogance of even thinking it could be done. He would have spent that time on a single piece.” And, harshly, from the Los Angeles Times: “When Lohan came out for a runway bow, her eyes were full of tears. And it’s easy to see why. After all the hullabaloo over her appointment a month ago, with some fashion insiders suggesting it was an insult to anyone who had ever really worked in design, it had to have been the walk of shame to end all.” But the most damning response came from the Fashion industry bible, Women’s Wear Daily. “As for the clothes, they looked cheesy and dated,” wrote WWD’s reviewer. “Hot pink, orange and flashy, with an overworked heart motif relentless in its execution, the collection displayed none of the promised younger side Lohan was supposed to deliver. Nor in a million years would one guess that the lineup was designed by one young woman and ‘creative directed’ by another. Glitter heart pasties all around, ladies?” Added the critic: “Lindsay, it’s time to get serious about reviving the acting career.” By Kat Angus – Canwest News Service October 5, 2009ALANA ZIMMER IN AKRIS
